Commercial exit door with push bar and vertical rod locking hardware

Vertical rods are just as important as the latch itself when it comes to the overall functionality of a multi-point locking system. It is easy to focus on the main latch, but every part of the system needs to work together.

This photo shows an exit door with vertical rod hardware. When I look at a setup like this, I look at the whole assembly. The push bar, rods, latches, and the way the door lines up all matter.

A door can look closed and still have a locking point that is not engaging properly. If a rod is binding or out of adjustment, the hardware may not operate smoothly. Replacing the main latch alone does not necessarily solve the problem.

The goal is simple. The door should close and latch properly, and the exit hardware should release smoothly when the bar is pressed. That means checking the complete system instead of stopping at the most obvious part.  Noticing these problems early is great preventative medicine for preventing even costlier hardware replacment.
